Over the Donbas under threat of a chemical disaster — UN Rapporteur
In the East of Ukraine there is a great risk chemical spill that threatens devastating consequences for the health of the local population and the environment.
This warned the UN special Rapporteur on the question of hazardous substances Basket Cunjak, is transmitted to the UN news Center.
Tunjuk recalled that at the Donbass there are large chemical and industrial plants. Armed clashes occur in cities located very close to these industrial enterprises.

For example, on February 24 was fired at a building, which contained seven tons of chlorine. Fortunately, the gas containers are not affected, but in the case of damage only one of them could have been killed all who were within 200 meters. And if the damage was more, it would have during the day to evacuate all the locals at the distance of 7.4 km.
“UN expert urged parties to the conflict to take into account the civilian nature of objects of infrastructure and water supply systems. He stated that areas that are adjacent to this infrastructure is necessary to “demilitarize”, — stated in the message.
Tunjuk recommended workers of water services, including in areas outside government control, the right equipment and equipment in case of damage to the stocks of chlorine. Then these experts will be able not only to survive but to take measures to rescue the local inhabitants.
As noted in the UN news Centre, UN office for the coordination of humanitarian Affairs has warned about the possibility of chemical contamination in the East of Ukraine.
Recall, Ukraine insists on the extension of the Special monitoring mission of the OSCE and improvement of monitoring procedures. This was announced by first Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Iryna Gerashchenko.
“European officials have just returned from Donbass where he studied the security and humanitarian situation. Exchanged views on the effectiveness of the mission the SMM, the OSCE, Ukraine insists on its expansion and improvement of the Assembly’s monitoring procedure”, — said Gerashchenko.
