In the Ukrainian foreign Ministry responded to the calls of Semiana about autonomy for Hungarians in Transcarpathia
The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine is surprised by the calls of the Vice-Prime Minister of Hungary Zsolt semien of the autonomy of the Hungarian minority in neighbouring countries and hope that this is not the official position of the country.
This is stated in the statement of the MFA of Ukraine.
“Was surprised to hear the public calls the Vice-Prime Minister of Hungary Zsolt semien of the autonomy of the Hungarian minority in neighbouring countries. Hungary has always been and is an important partner for Ukraine. We appreciate the friendly nature of bilateral relations and high level of constructive cooperation”, – stated in the message.

The Ministry said that they expect that the position regarding respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and the Constitution of Ukraine and will continue to remain the basis of good neighbourly relations.
“Any speculation on this subject is not in the interests of our two countries and peoples and, hopefully, do not reflect the official position of Budapest” – said the Minister.
It is noted that Ukraine and Hungary should work together to resist the attempts use of the rights of national minorities, including the interpretation of the words of Semiana, as it has repeatedly been made by the Russian aggressor, to foment an atmosphere of distrust and misunderstanding.
“After all, thanks to years of efforts of the Ukrainian government and the Hungarian community level for cultural, religious and educational needs of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine is in many ways an example for other countries in the region,” the statement said.
Earlier, Semien stated that autonomy is the goal and vision of the future for all ethnic Hungarians living abroad Hungary.

It should be noted that the Hungarians of Transcarpathia have broad cultural autonomy, in the area of active cell of public-political organizations of the Hungarians (CMX and UMDS), which at the time of elections becomes the parties. At the same time, relative political autonomy of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia is still under debate, particularly around recovery within the Transcarpathian region of the so-called Hungarian or prytysyans’ka electoral district that existed in the parliamentary elections of 1998.
In the Transcarpathian region in recent estimates, there are about 100 thousand ethnic Hungarians.
