Sexual violence and attacks on health facilities: the UN will consider human rights violations in the Donbass
This year, the Universal periodic review of the UN Council on human rights will consider the issues of unlawful detention and retention, attraction of children to armed groups, sexual violence and other problems that arose during the conflict in the Donbas.
As a result of careful analysis of the situation with human rights in the Donbass, the public organization “Eastern-Ukrainian center of public initiatives”, “Vostok SOS”, Luhansk regional human rights center “Alternative” and “peaceful shore” cooperating Coalition “Justice for peace in Donbas”, has prepared a presentation consisting of eight aspects of human rights violations, writes Radio Liberty.

Illegal detention places
Human rights activists have identified more than 150 illegal places of detention on both sides of the demarcation line. Access to places closed to Ukrainian and international organizations. “However, the lack of freedom in the so-called “LPR”/”DNR” still continue to function, although their number decreased in connection with the so-called centralization of “power” in the territory”, – said Anna Yanova, analyst at NGO “East-Ukrainian center of public initiatives”.
Among the priority actions, which human rights activists recommend to improve the situation is to ratify the European Convention on the compensation of victims of violent crimes.
Sexual violence
As of January 2017 during analysis of collected evidence of more than 280 interviews with victims of violations of human rights experts and human rights defenders found that in one third of cases it was about the different types of sexual violence in the context of the conflict.
A coalition of over 90 women who were victims of sexual violence directly in the places of unfreedom created by illegal armed groups, but such cases were recorded in the Ukrainian volunteer units.
Children and war
During the study of this question from the very beginning of the armed conflict human rights defenders recorded at least 30 cases involving minors in the conflict in the Donbass. Among them are persons who have not attained the age of 15.
