The escalation in the Donbas and bezviz: what Poroshenko spoke on the phone with the new President of Germany

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has held a phone conversation with the new President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

During the conversation Poroshenko congratulated Steinmeier with a confident victory in the presidential elections, which ended on 12 February 2017.

“During my tenure as Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany You were a real friend of Ukraine. It is a reliable basis for the further development of friendship between our peoples already in Your new, presidential quality,” — said Poroshenko.

In addition, the President noted the leading role of Germany and its political leadership in the process of restoring sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

So, the two presidents discussed a new escalation of Russian aggression in the Donbas. They focused on the worsening humanitarian situation in the vicinity of the Town, where the Russian fighters continue to fire at civilian targets, and in particular block access to the filtration station, which threatens the water supply of the whole region.

Petro Poroshenko also expressed the expectations that in March will be extended the so-called “Crimean package” of sanctions.

Recall that Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday, February 12, was elected as the new President of Germany. For 61-year-old former Minister of foreign Affairs of the country in the first round voted 931 delegate of the Federal Assembly. Note that the role of President in Germany is mainly ceremonial.
