The Majlis has filed a lawsuit against Russia with the European court of human rights

The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people has filed a lawsuit against Russia with the European court of human rights.

Informs the human rights centre “memorial” (Moscow), which, together with the European centre for the protection of human rights (England) and the Ukrainian Helsinki group represents the interests of the Mejlis of the ECHR, reports UKRINFORM.

The representative body of the Crimean Tatars will appeal the decision of the Russian authorities to ban its activities. In his complaint to the Majlis indicates that the inclusion in the list of extremist organizations violate article 11 (freedom of Assembly and Association) of the European Convention for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

In addition, Moscow has violated article 18 of the Convention (limitation on use of restrictions on rights), ban the Mejlis and its members in pursuit of their political position.

In the appeal to the ECHR indicated that Russian courts do not recognize the status of the Mejlis as the representative body of the indigenous Crimean people, thereby breaking the article “prohibition of discrimination”. The Majlis also deprived of the right to a fair trial.

“Memorial” noted that currently 18 documented enforced disappearances of Crimean Tatars in Russia-annexed Crimea. The activists found traces of beatings and torture.

We will remind, on September 26, 2016 the so-called “Supreme court of the Crimea” has recognized the Crimean Tatar Mejlis an extremist organization and banned its activities in Russia. Subsequently, this decision was confirmed by the Supreme court of the Russian Federation.
