The introduction of UN peacekeeping forces in the Donbass will be a tool for elections – Kurt Volker

About it in interview to the edition “Mirror of week” said the special representative of the US State Department in the negotiations on Ukraine Kurt Volker.
According to him, while Ukraine will have the necessary access to the territory, the elections will be impossible.

“This is one of the reasons for the braking of the Minsk process: on the one hand, there is an agreement to hold the elections, on the other — in the current circumstances their holding is unreal. If it is found acceptable through the involvement of international peacekeeping forces, then there will be a security tool, a means of physical control of territory. Under these conditions, when the conditions for effective international monitoring of local elections organization possible,” explained Walker.
However, the diplomat believes that in the case of elections, should be solved a number of issues “clearly identify who has the right to vote, as the return of internally displaced persons and give them the opportunity to participate in the elections.”
“And perhaps it should be more than one election than just a one-time vote, it should be a series of elections”, – said the diplomat.
We will remind that earlier the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko expressed belief that the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbass will be placed in all areas and will prevent the supply of troops and weapons to militants.
He stated this at a joint with the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau press conference in Toronto. In response, Trudeau said that “Canada believes in the idea of UN peacekeeping forces”.
