The US state Department urged Russia to immediately release Umerov

The United States is deeply concerned about the conviction and two year imprisonment of Crimean Tatar leader Ilmi Umerov in Russian-occupied Crimea.

This was reported in the U.S. Department of State.

“He was convicted for his opposition to the attempt of annexation of Russia in the Crimea and given a more harsh sentence than requested Russia’s occupation Prosecutor,” – said in the message.

Besides, the Ministry statement said about the “past injustice” in the case Umerov, in particular a few weeks of forced psychiatric treatment, which he was appointed in 2016.

“We urge the Russian occupying authorities to immediately release Umerov and to set aside his conviction. Crimea remains an integral part of Ukraine, and the United States remain unchanged support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine”, – stated in the state Department.

We will remind, the Simferopol district court, which is controlled by Russia, on Wednesday, September 27, issued a verdict in the trial of one of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar national movement Ilmi Umerov. Umarova sentenced to two years in colony-settlement. Russian occupation authorities in Crimea accused Umerov extremism. To such conclusion employees of FSB have come from statements of the Deputy Chairman of the Majlis of the channel ATR.
