Ukraine joined the UN Council on human rights

The results of the vote at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly Ukraine became part of the UN Council on human rights (HRC) with a mandate for the next three years.

About it writes UKRINFORM.

Ukraine during the vote supported the 177 member countries of the Organization.

“As a newly elected member of the HRC, Ukraine is using all mechanisms to fight against human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and the Donbass”, – said in comments to the Agency the press-Secretary of the Permanent mission of Ukraine to the UN Oleg Nikolenko.

The Ukrainian delegation in the HRC “focuses on the issues of prevention of human rights violations and to take initiatives in this matter in the context of the work of the Council.”

The main purpose of the HRC “protection of the rights and fundamental human freedoms in a fair and equal basis, as well as effective coordination and integration of activities relating to human rights within the UN system.” In General, the Council includes 47 countries, which are aggregated by regional groups: African States – 13 seats, Asia – 13 seats, Latin America and the Caribbean 8 seats, Eastern European States – 6 seats and Western European and other countries with 7. Ukraine belongs to the group of Eastern European countries.

Elections are held by secret ballot (ballots) each year for the next three years. So, today, the HRC was selected by 15 countries, including: Australia, Angola, Afghanistan, Spain, Qatar, Congo, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Senegal, Slovakia, Ukraine, Chile. They will replace RPL in the country, whose mandate ends on 31 December.

The group of Eastern European countries together with Ukraine, from 1 January Slovakia will include, in addition, will continue the membership of Albania and Latvia (until the end of 2018), as well as Croatia and Hungary (until end 2019). Ukraine first became a member of the HRC in 2006 and in 2008 was re-elected to the Council for a second term.

Recall that the concentration of troops and heavy artillery and armored machinery of the Russian Federation near the contact line in the East of Ukraine shows that Russia is ready to increase in fighting from the occupied territory at any moment.

This was stated during the work of the First Committee of the UN Director of the Department for international security Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Shutenko
