In the country there are positive indicators on the labor market and inflation.
The Federal reserve raised the discount rate from 0.25-0.5% to 0,5–0,75%.
Such decision was accepted at session of Committee on operations in open market FRS of 14 December, RBC reports citing the website of the regulator.
The decision to increase rates this year the fed has taken on the basis of positive data on the labor market and inflation: in recent months there has been a steady growth of employment and reduction in the share of the unemployed. Also, the fed is expecting a return to inflation at 2%.
It is noted that in 2017 the discount rate will increase three times – each time by 0.25%. Earlier it was planned to do it twice.
We will remind, last time the fed raised the base rate in December 2015. Before this was raised in 2006. Then, with the advent of the mortgage and the ensuing financial crisis, the fed for the first time in the history of America lowered the interest rate (i.e. the interest rate at which commercial banks borrow money from the regulator) to almost zero.
