Nationalization of “PrivatBank” and fighting under Svetlodarsk. What Poroshenko spoke with Merkel

German politician called the decision regarding the Bank’s “bold”.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has held a phone conversation with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.

Poroshenko expressed his condolences to the German people because of the terrorist attack on a Christmas market in Berlin.

“We condemn terrorism in all its manifestations and forms, wherever it occurs”, – quotes Poroshenko his press service.

Also politicians discussed the situation in Donbas, in particular, and the attempted attack, which tried to implement Russian militants in the area Svetlodarsk arc. Poroshenko and Merkel stressed the importance of the ceasefire in the Donbas and immediate release of Ukrainian hostages.

The Chancellor noted the importance of ratification by the Netherlands of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU and the completion of all procedures for granting Ukrainians a visa-free regime.

In addition, Merkel noted the “courageous and necessary” decision on the nationalization of “PrivatBank”.

We will remind, the decision on nationalization of one of the largest Ukrainian banks received on Sunday, December 18. The state now owns all 100% shares. She is represented by the Ministry of Finance guarantees the safety of customer funds. For their protection the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has submitted to Parliament a draft law on additional guarantees to depositors “PrivatBank”.

On 20 December the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law, which guarantees depositors “PrivatBank” 100% refund of the Deposit, as in “Oshchadbank” and does not limit UAH 200 thousand, as in other banks.

The Parliament adopted the presidential bill on additional guarantees to investors. It applies only to natural persons and ensures the return of deposits in more than 200 thousand hryvnia. Smaller deposits in case of bankruptcy the Bank will return the Deposit guarantee Fund. The bill was criticized in particular for the deterioration of the competitive conditions for commercial banks, which do not have such privileges.
