Citizens of Ukraine deserve the right to freely travel in EU – MEP

Ukrainian citizens deserve to travel freely to EU countries.

This was stated by MEP from Bulgaria Maria Gabriel during inter-institutional negotiations on the visa-free regime to Ukraine.

“The introduction of a visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine is an important step forward in reforming Ukrainian society, bring people together, build bridges across borders. We in the European Parliament are convinced that citizens of Ukraine deserve the right to move freely in the EU. The time has come for the Council of Europe to achieve results,” she said.

The European Parliament noted that after the introduction of a visa-free regime to Ukrainians with biometric passports to travel to EU countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the business, tourist or family purposes.

The abolition of visas will apply to all member States of the EU except Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is noted that visa-free regime does not give the right to employment in the EU.

On 14 February the European Parliament adopted the mechanism of temporary suspension besso.

On 2 February the European Parliament voted for the introduction of a visa-free regime with Georgia. In turn, 22 February the ambassadors of the European Union approved the mechanism of suspension besso with Georgia.

Note the European Parliament’s Committee on civil liberties, justice and internal Affairs approved an agreement to provide the citizens of Georgia visa-free access to the Schengen area as early as 12 January.
