Saakashvili does not create problems for foreign policy of Ukraine – Klimkin

The situation around the former head of Odessa state regional administration , Mikheil Saakashvili, does not affect the foreign policy of Ukraine.

This was stated by Ukrainian foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin to journalists in Baku, Interfax-Azerbaijan.

“The issue of Mikheil Saakashvili for Ukraine’s foreign policy is not a problem. Sometimes my colleagues in the EU, especially those who know Saakashvili, asking about his role in domestic politics. But they emphasize that this issue is an internal affair of Ukraine”,- said the Minister.

He also discussed about the situation with the citizenship of Saakashvili. “Now a petition on Mikheil Saakashvili have to consider a Ukrainian court. For me, it would be incorrect to comment on this issue prior to its consideration by the court. Wait for a legal decision”,- said the Minister.

Recall that Saakashvili was deprived of citizenship in late July, when he was outside Ukraine. He is a politician went back on September 10. He entered the territory of Ukraine through KP “shehyni”that in Lviv region, although I was going to make it through KP “Krakovets”. To the border he got a bus and crossed it illegally, together with 60 persons. Some of them have used force against the guards. The court found the politician guilty of illegally crossing the Ukrainian border and ordered to pay 3400 hryvnias of a penalty plus court fee 300 UAH.

The Ministry of justice of Ukraine received a request from the Prosecutor’s office of Georgia for the arrest and extradition of Saakashvili. In Georgia the politician is charged with four criminal counts. He faces up to 11 years of imprisonment.

Mikheil Saakashvili has filed a petition to grant him political asylum in Ukraine.
