A significant step for the implementation of Minsk agreements – foreign Minister of Germany on the exchange of hostages

Foreign Minister of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel, believes the exchange of hostages between the rebels and the Ukrainian authorities essential step for the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

“This is a significant step for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which we and our French partners strongly supported in the framework of the “Norman format”, – quotes DW German Minister.

The liberation of Ukrainian prisoners of war occurred in two stages, separately from two different terrorist organizations and on different sides of the demarcation line. First on controlled Ukraine of the territory through the checkpoint “Mayors” of the so-called “LNR” brought in 16 prisoners. But for prisoners of the so-called “DNR” I had to go to the occupied Horlivka. There the Ukrainian delegation handed over 58 prisoners.

Gabriel called the exchange of hostages an important humanitarian gesture before the New year and Christmas on January 7.

The head of the German foreign Ministry insists that the exchange should be followed by further steps to implement the Minsk agreements.

“Successful prisoner exchange demonstrates that it is possible! The Christmas truce agreement which was recently reached, must be strictly adhered to,” reads the statement by Sigmar Gabriel.
