Kiev almost certainly not regain control over the Donbas in 2018 – US intelligence

The conflict in the Donbas in 2018 will continue in its current form and any of the parties is unlikely to go on the offensive.

This is stated in the written report of the Director of national intelligence Dan Coates, reports Voice of America.

“The calculations of each of the parties can change if she sees that the other side seriously challenges the status quo,” warns Coates.

According to forecasts of American intelligence, Russia will continue attempts to destabilize Ukraine in the military, political and economic spheres. Moscow will seek to suppress and, where possible, expand efforts of Kiev, aimed at integration into the EU and strengthening ties with NATO.

Kiev will continue to resist the concessions demanded by Moscow, but “almost certainly will not recover in 2018, the year the control over sections of Eastern Ukraine, now controlled by Russia,” reads the report.

“Russia will dispense the level of violence in order to force Kiev and form a Moscow best situation in the negotiations,” according to US intelligence.
