Thorbjørn Jagland sent a letter to the head of the Ukrainian government.

The Council of Europe urged the Ukrainian authorities to conduct a proper investigation of attacks against Roma and to adhere to the European Convention on human rights, according to which ethnic minorities living on the territory of the country, should be guaranteed security.

This is stated in the letter of the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe thorbjørn Jagland, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Groisman.

“One of the main provisions of the Convention on human rights is the right to life and prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment, because I expect that Ukrainian authorities will conduct the necessary investigations quickly, transparently and efficiently, and will attract all those responsible to justice,” he stressed.

Jagland said that the attacks on Roma in Ukraine has begun with the incident on Bald hill in Kyiv in April 2018, and the last was the attack on the outskirts of Lviv, during which killed 24-year-old man and injured four people, including a child.

“It was reported that the attackers were members of radical nationalist organizations, and the police, knowing that the attack will happen, not intervene,” writes the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

According to Jagland, it is now important that all the responsible officials at the highest level, as well as representatives of local authorities and law enforcement agencies mobilized in response to a situation that “seems to have spread across Ukraine”.

“The Council of Europe is ready to continue cooperation with the authorities to implement the Strategy of integrating the Roma minority into the Ukrainian society”, – he added.
