The fighters are not allowed UN representatives to its prisons: human rights activists say about the likelihood of torture

The UN says that we have reason to believe that prisoners in the occupied Donbas are subjected to torture and ill-treatment. This is stated in the nineteenth report of the office of the UN high Commissioner for human rights (OHCHR) on the situation of human rights in Ukraine in the period from 16 may to 15 August 2017.

Human rights activists have stressed that they do not have access to places of detention on the territory controlled by armed groups, and therefore can not fully assess the conditions of detention.

“July 13, 2017 a woman with impaired hearing, who publicly criticized the “Luhansk people’s Republic” in social networks, was detained at a checkpoint by armed groups on the route crossing the line of contact in the Village, Luhansk. On 29 July she was taken to the same checkpoint and ordered to go on the side, controlled by Ukraine. The investigation into this case was initiated by the National police in the Luhansk region, said human rights activists.
