Ukraine was among the “hybrid regimes” in the world ranking of democracies

Ukraine took 83rd place out of 167 in rating 2017 Democracy Index, which measures the level of democracy in each country.

This rating is published the project of the British edition of The Economist – Intelligence Unit, according to the Ukrainska Pravda.

In determining the level of democracy take into account five aspects – electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, functioning of government, political participation and political culture. Countries were classified into four types – full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime, authoritarian regime.

Ukraine received a total score of 5.69 and was among the “hybrid regimes”. Most points, our country received for “political participation” is 6.67, for “functioning of government” (3.21 m).

“Stars can easily be seen that if the indicator is “functioning of government” was higher, the average score would have been more than 6 years, and it would be classified as “flawed democracy” and not the “hybrid mode”, – writes the edition.

It is worth noting that in 2016 and 2015, Ukraine in this ranking had a slightly higher score is 5.7, and in 2006 and 2008 – 6.94.

In ranking Democracy Index 2017 the first line is Norway, who scored 9.87 points. Latest 167 North Korea 1.08 points. Near Ukraine is located Honduras and Montenegro.

Western neighbors of Ukraine is located in the higher rating of our country: Slovakia (44th place), Poland (53), Hungary (56), Romania (64) and Moldova (78).

Russia and Belarus have been attributed to authoritarian regimes 135 and 138, respectively.

Remind, Ukraine ranked 77th position among the 113 countries in the ranking of the rule of law for 2017-2018, 12 points ahead of the Russian Federation. Compared to previous estimates, Ukraine climbed one position. The leaders of the ranking are Denmark, Norway and Finland. In last place was Venezuela, Cambodia and Afghanistan.
