In this regard, he confirmed continued support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.

Yelchenko reminded that it will soon be ten years since the Russian occupation of the Georgian territories. He expressed deep concern at the continued discrimination in these regions based on ethnic characteristics, limitations to education in their native language, and reports of mass destruction of the homes of ethnic Georgians in Tskhinvali region.

The representative of Ukraine also “strongly condemned” the recent decision of the Syrian authorities to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the occupied Georgian territories – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This decision is “a violation of the norms and principles of international law by the Assad regime, which clearly demonstrates the commitment of the current Syrian government to please the Kremlin,” – said the head of Ukraine’s Mission to the UN.

Earlier, the UN General Assembly approved the establishment of the office for combating terrorism to coordinate all efforts to combat the militants.
